about the transcending self project
Nearly 50% of transgender youth will have at least one suicide attempt by their 20th birthday. Globally, a transgender person is murdered every 29 hours. Visibility is one of the strongest tools we have to prevent this.
In my project, Transcending self, I am photographing transgender and gender expansive youth ages 2-20 and sharing their stories. Transcending Self is a critical project not only for the transgender community, but for all of us. Challenging existing narratives about identity works toward building a world in which all people are freer to become their true, complex selves--a world in which difference is embraced and validated, rather than marginalized and repressed.
